Legislative Action

Get Involved

One of the most important roles you can play as a conservation-minded recreational fisherperson is to make your views known to our elected officials. Historically, political activism by recreational fishers on behalf of our valuable natural resources has been left to a small hand full of the most dedicated volunteers. With advances in internet technology, becoming informed and making your views known has become easier and easier.

We have provided a few tools here to streamline reaching elected officials and simplify staying up to date on key legislation. While this helps with access, it is still critically important to understand the issues and what actions will lead to stability in the health of our wild and hatchery fish stocks. These issues and actions are discussed in other pages of this web site.

How to Be Effective

It may be helpful to understand the federal legislative process and accepted protocols for dealing effectively with elected officials at all levels. Here is another excellent resource on the federal structure.

The State of Washington's guidelines are also described here, as well as the state legislative process.

Here is information on working with congressional staffs.
One of the most useful references available on the internet is this guide for lobbying by non-profit organizations Another very good reference site is the National Wildlife Foundation's Action How-To's web page.

Keep in mind that threats or negative behavior will close the lines of communication with your legislators. Constructive input based on factual information will have the greatest impact.

Find Your Legislators

Locate easily your federal, state, county and local officials.

Additional State of Washington references to locate government officials.

Understanding the Competition
There may be occasion where it is useful to understand how others are influencing the legislative process. On place to look is the Federal Election Commission.

National Conservation Issues

Trout Unlimited's national staff is constantly working to understand and influence the outcome of key national legislation. Look here frequently for the most recent issues. Included is a shortcut and help for sending a message from you to your legislators on these issues.
The League of Conservation Voters maintains additional information on conservation legislation, as well as, information about the conservation records of members of Congress.
